I’ve just found out Casey Stoner is retiring from races. Wow. That was quite a shock. I always liked the guy, hes’ being one of my favorite riders in recent years though I’m not much into bike races anymore. Well after Troy Bayliss gradually my interest in SBK and MotoGP slowly sunked and that’s it.
After being around racing tracks and paddocks since I was 16, I just felt that too much was changed, all the Ecclestone crap settled in, electronics, uber sponsors and tv coverage hype, etc. Ok I don’t really want to get into any rants about what bikes race should be. Big fat money ate the sport? yeah maybe same old story.
I had this epic pic from the 90s, took in the paddocks of Misano GP, a barely 20 me sitting with Luca Cadalora on the open trunk of this junky fiat van. Kevin Schwantz is passing by on a moped waving at someone cut out of the frame. That pic got lost eventually during one of my endless house moving years ago, but not the memory. Me and Luca joked about how cool was riding downhill on Ape Piaggio, he used to do that in his hometown and my cousins for a while owned one…ahah..so we had to share few crazy stories and tips about how to turn the damn three wheel thing without flipping over a fence or something.
I see these motorbikes championships now, and I just don’t feel like I’m into that scene anymore. I guess sometime you get into things because passion and love. So maybe you can drop out of something for the very same reasons, if that something is not the same like when you started.
Whatever. All the best to Casey, he has this beautiful wife and baby and whole world of possibilities ahead. I can fully understand what he means saying “After so many years taking part in this sport that I love, and with all the sacrifices that I have had to make, I no longer have the passion to continue and I think that it is best to stop.”

what? He’s like 25. Carlos Checca is almost 40….
